As a former student assistant coach for a NCAA Division II college, I have a little experience in this. There are several things you could do.
1. If basketball is this important to you, choose a college that you have a realistic chance to walking on at. It’s easier to walk on at a smaller college then a place like Duke.
2. Hit the gym and weight room. College basketball at any level is very physical. Everday you aren’t working on your game, you’re falling behind.
3. You should show your interest. Go talk to the coach on the first day of school and ask about open try-outs. Don’t let the day of the try-outs be the first day you see the coach. Let him know that you’re willing to do whatever it takes and you’re willing to help with any camps or do any work that needs to be done even if it’s washing practice jerseys or something like that.
4. Don’t give up if you don’t make it your first year. I’ve seen people come back the second and third year and finally make the team as a walk on. Stick to this and you’ll have a shot.
